Interactive Voice Response (IVR)

IVR is an automated phone system that interacts with callers through voice and keypad inputs, guiding them to information or the right department.

While IVR has been around for a while, its integration with AI significantly enhances its capabilities for small businesses. Traditional IVR relies on pre-recorded messages and keypad presses, but AI-powered IVR (often referred to as 'conversational IVR') uses voice recognition and natural language understanding to interpret what callers say. This allows for more fluid, natural conversations where customers can express their needs in their own words, rather than navigating rigid menus.

For a small business, an AI-enhanced IVR can dramatically improve the phone-based customer experience by reducing wait times, accurately routing calls, and even resolving common issues without needing a live agent. It acts as a smart virtual receptionist, improving efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Example

When a customer calls a small clinic, the AI-powered IVR asks "How can I help you today?" and understands "I'd like to schedule an appointment" to direct them to the booking system.
