Foundation Model

A very large AI model trained on a vast and diverse dataset that can be adapted for a wide range of downstream tasks.

Think of a Foundation Model as a highly versatile, pre-trained AI brain that has absorbed an enormous amount of general knowledge from the world. It's 'foundational' because it serves as the starting point for developing many other more specialized AI applications.

For a small business, Foundation Models are what power many of the advanced AI tools you use. Instead of building an AI from scratch (which is incredibly expensive and complex), businesses can take an existing foundation model (like GPT-3/4) and then 'fine-tune' it with their specific data or instructions to perform particular tasks – such as writing blog posts in a specific brand voice, answering customer questions, or generating unique product descriptions. It dramatically lowers the barrier to entry for leveraging advanced AI.

Example

An independent game developer uses a foundation model as a starting point to generate dialogue for game characters, then fine-tunes it to match the specific tone and vocabulary of their game world.
