Context Window

The amount of text (measured in tokens) that an AI model can consider at one time when generating a response or understanding a prompt.

Imagine an AI has a short-term memory, like a temporary notepad. The context window is the size of that notepad. It includes the prompt you give the AI and its previous responses in a conversation. The AI uses only the information within this window to formulate its next output.

For small businesses using chatbots or AI assistants, the context window is crucial for maintaining coherent conversations. If a conversation goes on for too long, older parts might fall out of the context window, causing the AI to 'forget' previous details. Understanding this helps you structure interactions, potentially summarizing key points or re-introducing information if the conversation needs to stay focused over many turns.

Example

In a long AI chatbot conversation with a customer about a complex order, if the 'context window' is too small, the chatbot might forget details mentioned earlier, leading to repetitive questions or irrelevant responses.
